Have Questions . . .
-
How long does training take?Owner-assisted Service Dog training is highly individualized. There are many factors that determine the length of training for each Service Dog Team. See the Training Journey page for more information.
-
What question can be asked of a Service Dog Team? There are only 2 legal questions that a service dog team can be asked. Is this a Service Dog. Answer: yes What does your Service Dog do for you? Answer: My Service Dog is for mobility, or medical alert, etc. You do not have to provide your diagnosis or discuss your medical condition as this information is protected by HIPPA.
-
Certification and RegistrationThere is no official licensing or registering for Service Dogs. However, having some form of identification such as a service vest and certificate of passing a public access test can be helpful. All At Your Service Dog Training teams are vested when in public.
-
What is your background?Training Service Dogs has been our passion for over 10 years. While founding and operating a Pittsburgh based non-profit we also trained privately owned dogs. In January of 2023, a decision was made to close the non-profit and we transitioned to concentrating solely on training owner's dogs for service. It has been highly rewarding to work directly with the individual in need from day one. Our lead trainer is certified by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and Family Dog Mediation. We stay current on the disabilities and service dog training. We collaborate with other trainers and professionals in the industry. We have attended/continued to attend training and seminars with Suzanne Clothier, Fenzi Dog Sports Academy, Canine Companions, Train the Trainer Program, Ian Dunbar, Karen Pryor and the Clicker Expo, Animal Emotions and others. We look forward to working with you on your service dog journey.
-
Public AccessUntil such time as any individual, typically a child, is able to pass a public access test the dog, the individual and a primary handler act as a team.
-
Is my dog guaranteed to be a Service Dog?No. There is no guarantee that your dog will complete training and work as a service dog.
